Breakfast in Tatvan

Let’s say you have arrived in Tatvan in the morning when you visit around Lake Van. You will need to have a good breakfast. What to do then? Here is what I offer. Buy some cheese and olive in a localmarket. Don’t forget to tastebefore buying. If you ask for it, the owner of market will gladly offer you a piece of cheese and olive. If you buy them in a package (prepared in factory), then there is no chance for tasting. After fixing this issue, you can buy honey, butter, jam from a pastry shop (pastane) in town. This won’t cost much at all. In the pastry shops in Tatvan, you can find ready-to-eat boiled eggs. If you like, you can buy one or two eggs depending on how much hungry you are! them

Finally, find a ‘fırın’ to buy bread. Please ask for the freshest ones. I would recommend one bread and two çörek. Don’t forget to buy a newspaper in the meantime! You will need it after!

Your next stop is the coast of Lake Van in Tatvan. You will see very nice cafés there. You can sit out under the trees and start to prepare your breakfast table. That is the time you need newspaper. Well, the newspaper idea may not be hygienic or so on but it is once in a lifetime. So feel free as much as you can! (If you have better options, great!) Lay your newspaper on table and put your stuff on it. If you want to experience a real Turkish breakfast, you must drink tea for sure. It would be pity otherwise. You can order tea by glass or semaver (from which you can serve your own teas and drink as much as 15 glasses, ideal for families, groups or tea-addicted people!).

Afiyet olsun!! Bon appetite!

Having a Walk in Tatvan

Tatvan is a town of Bitlis but it is bigger than Bitlis. When I saw this town for the first time, I have been deeply impressed. It is one of the cutest towns I have ever seen. It is right next to Lake Van and Mountain Nemrut.  If you are having a round trip around Lake Van, Tatvan is one of the stop points. If you don’t have much time, I suggest you to walk through the lake in Tatvan. The view is wonderful and you will feel relaxed as people don’t bother you with their sights and eyes. Friendly people will let you enjoy the view much more. Sometimes walking in such places is a unique escape for those who need a rest for their heads.

Visiting the biggest mosque in Eastern Turkey

Whether you are muslim or not, this is a definite place to see or pray. It is the biggest mosque in Eastern Turkey and definitely worth of a visit. It is called Ibadullah Camii and I am really impressed by it. The mosques in eastern Turkey resemble those from the times of Ottoman. For example, the columns of Ibadullah reminded of Blue Mosque’s in Istanbul. The ornamentations and workmanship of the mosque are totally amazing. It is a big complex with ablution parts, outside points and places for different kind of functions. As it is in downtown of Tatvan, you can reach it easily. There is a website prepared for the mosque; you can have a look at it here. (The site is in Turkish)

Eating in Hizan

This tip is for exclusive escapers, for those who follow their nose when they travel to somewhere. If you somehow manage to find yourself in Hizan and feel hungry, there is an address I can recommend. Ok, it is not the best option but it was the best we could find in town. Hizan is a very small town of Bitlis and there is not much to do there but it has a wonderful landscape (especially Tatvan-Hizan road). In the center you can eat at Yayla Kebap Salonu . The prices are normal but my best suggestion would be eating as light as possible. Because, no matter how well they cook, still there may be problems with food. Their salad has much onion inside. If you don’t like it, you can explain your preferences to them. Actually, the best thing about this place is their staff. They have been extremely to me and my friends. So, I guess this is why I recommend this place. But don’t forget, eat as light as possible!

Tatvan - Hizan (Escape Drive)

I know you are looking for a special tip that you have never read somewhere else. Here I am telling it right now. If you have time in Tatvan, I suggest you to take the road to Hizan town (very small town of Bitlis). It is about fifty kilometres from Tatvan and the road is scenic. A small stream is following the road after some time and you even come across surprising experiences like waterfalls (look at the picture) and amazingly cold water resources to drink. If you have a local, it would be nice but it is not a must. The nature, landscape and the countryside are simply eye-catching in this yet-undiscovered region of Turkey. I have been there in late July and it was wonderful at that time there. I guess it is spectacular starting from June till the end of September. Be aware of winds as you will be in one of the highest parts of Turkey! (Feel free to leave a comment for hotel options around the region.)

This photo will give the idea how beautiful roadsides are when you are driving...

Journey to Van

If you plan to go to Van from any part of country (Turkey), I can suggest you two main popular bus companies. One of them is Best Van Tur and the second one is Van Gölü Seyahat. As far as i observed, these two companies are the most popular ones. If you travel to Van from Tatvan and want to reach Van via Gevaş (Akdamar), you have to take Best Van or Van Gölü. But if you want to see interesting places such as Ahlat and Erciş, you can take Erciş İtimat for that. Because it makes a round trip around the lake which might be interesting for you. (If you need accommodation around the region, feel free to leave a message)

Eating at Downtown Izmir

Kasarli Pide in Servet is delicious

When you visit a new country, you should taste local dishes for sure. Sometimes it is not very easy to find good places to eat out during your holiday time. In a town like Izmir of Turkey, you have many options but that's where the problem begins. As I have been to Izmir downtown recently, I have found a nice place called "Servet" in downtown Izmir, around Pasaport. The prices are not exaggerated and their service and meals are good quality. I took the picture above and liked "Kasarli Pide" much. If you want, they bring you different kinds of salads, yoghurt and much more.

They feature all kinds of grilled meats and kebabs notably "çöp şiş" and you can see the famous people's photos who have eaten at this restaurant hanged on the walls of the restaurant. You can access to their website here.

Silent in Lake Bafa

Recently, I had a chance to visit some parts of Turkey that I had never been before. One of them is Lake Bafa and I must tell that I am impressed by the nature around the lake. It is fantastic for those who need a true relaxation. Interestingly-shaped rocks, a lake with sandy beaches (yes really!), ancient Heraklia, monastries in the islands on lake, rich ecology and much more. I have prepared the video below from the pictures I have taken. I hope you like them and they will give you an idea about Lake Bafa in Western Turkey.

Southeastern Anatolia

River Tigris and the fertile lands in Valley of Tigris

Have you ever been to a city which is a mixture of Asia, Europe and Middle East? Well, it is possible in southeastern Turkey. Rich cuisines, friendly people, hidden treasures to be discovered; this is the true Southeastern Turkey. Although the region isn’t advertised well, it has much to offer every type of tourists. Especially ‘culture-geeks’ and ‘escapers’ or those who need a city break and unforgettable excursion will enjoy these lands much.

Diyarbakır is one of the most interesting cities in Turkey. It is the true mixture of Asia, Europe and Middle East. I am sure that delicious Kurdish and Turkish cuisine will impress you together with the world’s second longest walls (after Great Walls of China) and typical basalt-made Diyarbakır houses & streets which are ornamented with beautiful motives. The mosques and churches will help you see that intercultural and interfaith dialog gain the right meaning here. You’ll forget about anything when you watch River Tigris and the valley of Tigris. Later, you will have a chance to go back in history and see one of the oldest settlements in the whole world in Çayönü, Ergani town.

Gaziantep is famous for its delicious sweets such as baklava that may cause you get extra weight during your stay. Hosting top quality Gaziantep houses which are converted to boutique hotels, the city has many accommodation options. Get ready to meet warm-hearted local people and try to hear the whispers of antique Zeugma.

Şanlıurfa is one of the best locations for those who are looking forward to seeing interesting places and meeting the people with different social backgrounds. Abraham’s Pond, The Lake Fish and Urfa Citadel attract many tourists but that doesn’t mean you won’t rest in a peaceful atmosphere. The biggest dam of Turkey, Atatürk, is close to Urfa and it has a beautiful setting for nature lovers. Göbeklitepe is for those who are interested in archeology and history. Bee-hive Harran houses and the world’s oldest university in Harran must be seen.

Mardin, settled on the fertile lands of Mesopotamia, is very close to Syria. With its beautifully ornamented streets and houses, Mardin itself is like an open air museum. Diyarbakır’s old buildings are generally black thanks to basalts brought from Karacadağ while Mardin’s ‘color’ is ‘brown’. Mardin is also important for its diverse culture (Syrian, Turkish, Kurdish) and remarkable mosques, churches and monastery in different parts of the city.

Adıyaman is mostly known for the interesting statues dating back to Commagene Kingdom on Nemrut Mountain. It is said that this mountain has got arguably the best viewpoint for the sunrise and sunset. Since it is not as big as Urfa, Antep and Diyarbakır, Adıyaman can be a good option for escapers with the opportunities it presents.

Batman is Turkey’s petrol capital although people’s economic situation is not good compared to what they have. Hasankeyf is the best of the things Batman has. Looking like Cappadocia of southeast, Hasankeyf is a perfect choice for one or two-day excursion. Enjoy the fresh fish of Tigris and forget about anything while watching the beautiful valley of Tigris and mountain ranges.

Şırnak has a very beautiful natural setting especially in some towns but today there may be security problem from time to time. Siirt and Kilis are the other cities in the region. Like other cities, people are extremely friendly and some are even willing to host you.

Nemrut Crater Lake in Tatvan

Eastern Anatolia Region is the biggest region in the terms of the area it covers while Southeastern Anatolia Region is one of the smallest regions in Turkey. Since Turkey’s top touristic locations are in mostly western Turkey, these regions are not visited by tourists as much as the rest of Turkey. Still, that doesn’t mean it is because there is nothing interesting. Actually, this part of Turkey is a real mixture of Asia and Europe, Europe and Middle East, Asia and Middle East. If you know where to go, you can experience an unforgettable holiday in this region. Let’s see some options;

First of all, Lake Van, the biggest lake of the country, is in this region. Lake Van is where nature meets history. From Armenian Kingdoms, to Seljuk Empire, the surrounding of lake is rich. Recently restored holy church in Akdamar Island and nearby town of Tatvan with the gorgeous Mount Nemrut and breathtaking Nemrut Crater Lake are among the must-see places.

Ahlat, located on the shores of Lake Van, is famous for its cemetery from Seljuks. Suphan Mountain is also in this part of the region and the mountain is the third biggest in Turkey. At the foot of this mountain, you will experience real ‘escapes’ since there are natural beauties like forests and lakes.

Bingöl, which means ‘thousand lakes’ in Turkish, deserves its name because of the countless glacier lakes made up by the melting glaciers. The region has beautiful landscape and some interesting caves.

Tunceli has got the Munzur Valley Natural Park and it is one of the most beautiful in the whole country. It has got a rich flora and fauna and they are unspoilt.

Hazar Lake is located in the borders of Elazığ and the lake in the mountainous region is absolutely beautiful. Harput, a very close town to Elazığ, dates back to very old times and has much to offer to tourists.

Erzincan is a city surrounded by mountains and this can make you understand how interesting and nice the city’s surrounding is. Together with the city of Malatya, Erzincan is one of top cities of Turkey in terms of rich architecture. Since Malatya is in the middle of a fertile plateau, it has many natural beauties to show.

Hakkari may have a security problem from time to time but this doesn’t change the fact that it has beautiful and interesting flowers and water springs. Zap Valley has eye-catching beauties including Zap Stream.

Ishak Pasha Palace in Doğubeyazıt, Ağrı is one of the great examples of the historical Turkish palaces. The highest peak of Turkey is located in Ağrı; Mount Ağrı (Mount Ararat) which is a gorgeous mountain with full of snow and ice at the top all the time.

Sivas, lying in the broad valley of Kızılırmak river, has many monuments from Seljuks including Mavi Medrese, Şifaiye Medresesi, Çifte Minare Medresesi. Thermal springs of Sivas are believed to cure many illnesses.

Kars, which is described in detail in Nobel-prize winner Turkish author Orhan Pamuk’s ‘Snow’, is a rich city in terms of culture since Turkish, Russian, Armenian, Caucasian and Kurdish affected much of Kars’ architecture and lifestyle. The medieval city of Ani’s ruins near Kars attract many people today. But it may be more exciting to go there as a part of your escape!

Erzurum is another city to enjoy in this region. Rich cuisine and beautiful landscape are effective to make the city more attractive. Palandöken Mountain range is often frequented by ski lovers and the city will host 2011 Winter Universiade. Iğdır and Ardahan are other cities in this region. Ardahan has a wonderful landscape which makes it a hot spot for escapers.

Sun, world-class beaches, cultural richness, must-try cuisine and much more.

Well, I and my friend are working hard on our Balkanatolia project these days. We plan to make it public as soon as possible. The site and the project make us very excited. Basically, we have chosen four countries for this project. They are Albania, Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey. Maybe we will include countries such as Romania, Cyprus, FyR Macedonia, Croatia, Bosnia sometime in the future. It totally depends on how things will work...

Turkey is a bridge between Europe, Asia and Middle East as well as many civilisations. Enjoy the historical atmosphere all around the country and taste from world-class Turkish cuisine when you give a stop. Let the sun shine upon you in the golden coasts of Aegean and Mediterranean. Climb up a mountain for trekking then and come across the hidden treasures of local people and culture.

Turkey is one of the best if you need to have 'culture', 'sea', 'food', 'mountain' and much more!
