Crete, land of Minoans

Taverna in Crete

Greece has lots of islands with inhabitants inside and thousands (or millions) of tourists visiting them. Crete, the island of the Minoan civilization, is one of these. I have read about it and made a search for you. I am sure that you will enjoy as much as I did. (I plan to post more details about Crete as soon as possible)

Did you know that Crete was the largest of all Greek islands? Well, indeed it is. Considering the past and today of this island, we can understand why it was / is so important. It is located in Mediterranean Sea down the Southern Greece and Cyclades Islands. Crete has almost everything for tourists; seas as clear as crystal, beaches with blue flags, atmospheric villages, mountain ranges, sunny weather...

The main city on the island is Heraklion which is very rich in terms of culture. Another city on this island is the ex-Venetian city of Chania where White Mountains offer a picturesque scene. Historical Knossos Minoan Palace is located in the beautiful valley of river Kairatos. The place is not far from Heraklion, so many tourists visit there. Knossos is not the only thing from past. Places like ancient city of Phaistos, Kamares, Monastiraki, Gortyn, Lissos and sacred caves enrichen the island. The natural beauties Psiloritis Mountains and its highest peak Mount Ida, Sitia Mountains, White Mountains and many others are on the list of escapers. In Samariá Gorge, the national park on the island and the longest gorge of the country, hiking is strongly recommended (in the beautiful landscape).

Since Crete was home to many civilizations, the number of historical buildings and architecture is remarkable. From Byzantine walls to Ottoman mosques, synagogues to cathedral, Venetian shipyards to lighthouses, fountains to Turkish baths; all available in Crete.

I am sure that any tourist will have something for themselves in the island of Crete. If you ask me, the luckiest tourists are those who want to rest their head and truly escape from the noise of people! But, you just have to know where to stay and what / when to see in mountainous Crete!
